The Religion of Assumptions: A Revelation of Surah Al-Kahf 18:102 Concerning the People of the End Times
Part 4 - Frasa a fa hasiballaziina kafaruuu أَفَحَسِبَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓاْ
We have examined each word in the opening phrase of verse 18:102.
The phrase أَفَحَسِبَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا carries a profound meaning that disbelief does not always begin with the rejection of God, but begins with assumptions about God.
The words ḥasiba (to assume) and kafarū (to cover or deny) are placed together by Allah in the same verse to show the cause-and-effect relationship within the human heart. When a person begins to assume, that person begins to cover. When the covering persists, the person becomes a disbeliever.
Kafarū (كَفَرُوا) in Surah Al-Kahf 18:102 is not merely a historical label, but a description of the state of the people of the End Times. They know the truth, yet still reject it. They continue to practice religion, yet hold tightly to personal assumptions. Eventually, they evaluate God according to the measure of their own intellect.
Therefore, the phrase أَفَحَسِبَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا is a divine question that rebukes those who think that truth can be judged by the human mind, whereas only Allah has the right to determine judgment.
The true meaning behind the phrase أَفَحَسِبَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا is:
“So after they became blind to remembrance and deaf to revelation, do they then assume, O those who continually cover the truth?”
This is the form of disbelief that arises from one’s own thinking. It is not rejection of God out of hatred, but rejection of revelation because of the belief that the human intellect is more qualified to define truth. This is where the collapse of faith begins, when human assumption takes the place of divine revelation.
