313: The Number of Badr That Became a Mind Barrier

The number 313 is extremely popular. Mention Imam Mahdi, the ikhwan of the end times, awliya, a chosen force or a group that will rise at the end of time, and before long the number 313 will appear.

Some are searching for the 313. Some say they are forming the 313. Others feel that they may be among the 313. Some even declare that they are the true 313.

Did Rasulullah SAW really teach that only 313 people would become the fighters or supporters of Mahdi, to the point that people today need to search for, form or determine who those 313 are?

Let us return to the sources.

313 Originally Relates to Badr

The strongest trace of the number 313 is found in the Battle of Badr.

The Qur’an first tells the story of Talut and his army. When they were tested with a river, only a small number passed the test.

Allah says in Surah al-Baqarah 2:249:

Then when Talut set out with the army, he said: “Indeed, Allah will test you with a river. Whoever drinks from it is not of me, and whoever does not taste it is indeed of me, except whoever scoops a single handful with his hand.” Yet they drank from it except for a small number of them. Then when Talut and those who believed with him had crossed it, those who had drunk said: “We have no strength today against Jalut and his army.” But those who were certain that they would meet Allah said: “How many a small group has overcome a large group by Allah’s permission, and Allah is with those who are patient.”

Surah al-Baqarah 2:249

However, pay attention to something very important.

The Qur’an Does Not Mention the Number 313 in the Story of Talut.

The number 313 appears through narrations concerning the people of Badr.

In Sahih al-Bukhari 3958, al-Bara’ narrated that the Companions said the number of the people of Badr was the same as the number of Talut’s followers who crossed the river with him. The wording in al-Bukhari states:

بِضْعَةَ عَشَرَ وَثَلَاثَمِائَةٍ

Three hundred and some ten men.

The narration in Jami’ al-Tirmidhi 1598, meanwhile, gives the precise number:

ثَلَاثِمِائَةٍ وَثَلَاثَةَ عَشَرَ رَجُلًا

Three hundred and thirteen men.

Al-Tirmidhi graded the hadith as hasan sahih.

Therefore, 313 is not a number that appeared without any basis. It does have a history. It is a number famously associated with the people of Badr.

Did the Number of the People of Badr Become a Doctrine?

This is where we need to be careful. Historical narrations do not all give exactly the same mathematical figure. Some sources mention around 310, 312, 313 and other figures in the range of three hundred and some ten.

That is why 313 became the most famous figure, but we should not turn this historical number into a mystical formula simply because the number looks attractive.

The force at Badr was also extremely poorly equipped. Sirah sources mention that they had around two horses and 70 camels, which were ridden in turns. They were not a large army that set out with complete preparations for war.

Yet this is precisely where the beauty of Badr lies. The value of the people of Badr was not because the number 313 possessed any power.

Their value lay in who they were, what they faced and how they stood with Rasulullah SAW when circumstances were extremely difficult.

The number merely recorded the people. The people were not created to fulfil the meaning of a number.

How Did 313 Enter the Mahdi Narrative?

After that, if we investigate further, we find end-times narrations stating that a man will be given bay’ah between the Rukn and the Maqam by:

مِثْلُ عِدَّةِ أَهْلِ بَدْرٍ

“A number like the people of Badr.”

There are also narrations with the wording:

عِدَّةَ أَهْلِ بَدْرٍ

“The number of the people of Badr.”

Narrations such as these do indeed appear in works of hadith and fitan. Among them are narrations transmitted through al-Hakim, Nu’aim bin Hammad and al-Tabarani. But there is something that is very rarely explained when the number 313 is popularised. Despite its popularity, it is not firmly established.

First: The Chains of These Narrations Are Not All Strong

In fact, hadith scholars have issued very severe assessments of some of the chains of narrations that mention a bay’ah involving “a number like the people of Badr”. Some chains have been graded weak, while others contain narrators who were seriously disputed.

More interestingly, the narration in Abu Dawud concerning the man who will be given bay’ah between the Rukn and the Maqam does not mention the number 313 in its wording.

This leads to one very important question:

How can something whose narrational status itself requires discussion become a doctrine that “Mahdi’s army must consist of 313 people”?

That is the real question I want to raise in this article.

From Narration to Doctrine

I have encountered the number 313 for a long time. It appears in various circles. There are silat groups, healing groups, dhikr groups and various jamaah with their own understanding of who will become the chosen people of the end times.

I do not mean that all these groups are the same. The problem begins when a number becomes an identity and a symbol. One group has its 313. Another group also has its 313. Somewhere else, another 313 appears. If two groups each have their own 313, then one country may already have hundreds of groups claiming 313, while another country has hundreds more.

If groups across the entire world each have their own 313, then the question is no longer merely:

“Who are the 313?”

It has already changed into:

“Which 313?”

We are the ones who must ask what evidence gives people today the right to determine that their group is the one being referred to.

First Danger: People Begin to Feel That They Are Chosen

At the beginning, a person may simply be attracted to the number.

Then he enters an environment where people constantly talk about it.

Over time, a feeling begins to emerge:

“Perhaps we are the 313.”

After that, different layers and ranks of people may begin to appear.

There is the ordinary group.

There is the special group.

There are insiders.

There are those who are even further inside.

There are ordinary people.

There are those regarded as awliya.

There are those believed to have secret missions.

Without realising it, a number that originally described the people of Badr has become a tool for constructing spiritual castes.

This is where “feeling” becomes extremely dangerous when it is not examined against the Qur’an and hadith.

A person may feel calm, feel guided, feel called, feel summoned, feel that he is part of something great and then begin to feel special and chosen.

We must remember that even if a feeling happens to be correct, we must still acknowledge that feeling is not evidence.

The Qur’an itself reminds us:

وَلَا تَقْفُ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْبَصَرَ وَٱلْفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ كَانَ عَنْهُ مَسْـُٔولًا

And do not follow that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the fu’ad, all of these will be questioned about it.

Surah al-Isra’ 17:36.

Any inner experience, dream, passing thought or internal conviction must still be tested. If a belief produces a major religious claim, it cannot stand merely upon “I feel”. It must stand upon the facts of the Qur’an and be confirmed by hadith.

Second Danger: Others Begin to Feel That They Are Not Worthy

This is the consequence that I believe is even greater. Imagine an ordinary Muslim who hears that Mahdi will have only 313 chosen people.

Then he looks at those who are said to be candidates for the 313. Some are known as devoted worshippers. Some have spent years in spiritual training. Some are regarded as possessing certain advantages. Some have decades of experience.

Then he looks at himself. He is an ordinary person, unknown, with no position and no extraordinary experience.

Then a conclusion enters his mind:

“I could never be one of them.”

This is where 313 turns into a mind barrier. Not because the hadith about Badr is wrong and not because the people of Badr did not number around that figure.

It happens because a historical number has been turned into an exclusive gateway that causes other people to feel that the path towards goodness has been closed to them.

Yet the Qur’an never teaches a person to stop doing good merely because his name may not appear on a list of 313.

The doors of iman, tawbah, righteous deeds, patience, sacrifice and defending the truth do not have a quota of 313.

Do Not Wait to Become One of the 313

This is a psychological problem that everyone must break. You do not need to wait for someone to declare that you are a chosen person. You do not need to enter a secret group. You do not need to have a particular dream.

You do not need first to feel that you are a wali.

If you want to follow Rasulullah SAW, then follow what is clear.

Improve our aqidah.

Strengthen our iman and guard it until we become mu’min.

Improve our knowledge until we become ulul albab.

Fulfil the trusts that we have received and maintain our relationships with other people.

Take care of our families and fulfil every right.

Help people and always be a good person even towards those we do not know.

Uphold justice within whatever space and capacity we have.

Prepare ourselves to face trials without constructing a belief that we possess an inner spiritual rank for which Allah has never given us evidence.

Ignore all these feelings, because goodness does not require a caste. Do good and then forget it. Do not count it, do not memorise it and certainly do not bring it up later.

Badr Itself Teaches Us Not to Become “Badr 313”

Ironically, if we truly want to learn from the 313 people of Badr, perhaps the first thing we need to discard is the obsession with becoming “313”. Discard it. Do not hesitate.

Examine it properly, reflect upon it carefully and gather sufficient information. Did the people of Badr really leave Madinah while declaring:

“We are the Badr 313?”

They had no idea that thousands of years later, people would turn their number into a sacred number. They were simply living through a real situation. They fought within reality.

They were tested and then made the choice to fight.

History then recorded them, and we must remember them because of the reality of what they did, not because of some sacred quality attached to their number.

They did not chase the number 313. The number 313 chased them through history.

313 Is Not an Exclusive Licence

I do not reject the hadith concerning the people of Badr. On the contrary, it is precisely that hadith that must be returned to its proper place.

313 has a strong basis as the famous number associated with the people of Badr, but from there we cannot simply leap to the conclusion:

313 people of Badr = only 313 soldiers of Mahdi = our group is that 313.

Every equals sign (=) above requires its own evidence. One narration cannot be stretched into three additional doctrines simply because everything appears to fit, match and suit our preference.

If there is a Mahdi narration that uses the expression “like the number of the people of Badr”, then study its sanad and matn.

If someone claims to have 313, ask for the evidence.

If a jamaah claims that they are that group, ask how they know.

If the answer eventually returns to dreams, feelings, whispers, someone’s experiences, sainthood or supernatural status, then we return to the same principle:

Feeling is not evidence.

Break the 313 Mind Barrier

Try doing one thing.

For a moment, forget every image of the 313 that you have ever heard.

Do not think only about your own group.

Do not think only about the Nusantara.

Do not think about a particular teacher, jamaah or figure.

Look at humanity more broadly.

Then return to the Qur’an and hadith one by one.

Separate:

What the Qur’an actually says.

What authentic hadith actually says.

What comes from weak or disputed narrations.

What is actually only human interpretation.

Once you successfully separate these four things that I have mentioned, much of the “mystery of 313” will disappear by itself.

What remains is something far simpler. 313 is a number with a special place in the history of Badr.

It was later used in some narrations and end-times traditions. But that does not give anyone today a special interpretation that allows them to declare:

“We are the 313.”

Or to make others feel:

“I am not one of the 313. Therefore, I have no role.”

Do not allow a single number to become a mind barrier.

Our greatest mistake is not failing to become one of the 313. The greatest mistake is to stop doing good because we assume that Allah only has a place for 313 people.
