Part 3: The Sky Sends Warnings, The Earth Stores Wrath

Are disasters merely natural coincidences? Or are they signals sent from the heavens and the earth that stores ancient rage? In Part 1 and Part 2, we have explored how the People of Saba’ are the ancestral root of a portion of the Nusantara population. They were punished with a great flood, and the traces remain carved into the geographical form of the archipelago we inhabit today.

But the greater question is: Will the disaster repeat?

And if it does, what are the early signs?

Three Calamity Factors from Surah Saba’

Allah SWT speaks of the punishment that befell the People of Saba’:

فَأَعْرَضُوا۟ فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَيْلَ ٱلْعَرِمِ وَبَدَّلْنَـٰهُم بِجَنَّتَيْهِمْ جَنَّتَيْنِ ذَوَاتَىْ أُكُلٍ خَمْطٍۢ وَأَثْلٍۢ وَشَىْءٍۢ مِّن سِدْرٍۢ قَلِيلٍۢ

“But they turned away, so We sent upon them the flood of the dam, and We replaced their two gardens with gardens producing bitter fruit, tamarisks, and some sparse lote trees.”

(Surah Saba’ 34:16)

From this verse and related verses in Surah Saba’, we can identify three forms of disasters closely tied to physical punishment and geological transformation:

1. Water from Below: The Collapse of Dams and Irrigation Systems

The term "سَيْلَ ٱلْعَرِمِ" (sail al-‘arim) refers to a flood caused by structural failure of a dam. It destroyed their irrigation systems and brought total ruin to their agricultural wealth. This is the most direct physical factor — destruction from within the system itself.

2. Water from Above: Rising Seas and Surface Flooding

The transformation of the gardens and geography after the disaster suggests a complete landscape shift. Land became islands. River deltas turned into dry highlands. This indicates rising sea levels, major floods from above, or natural phenomena that submerged once-fertile agricultural zones — as we now witness in the thousands of fragmented islands in the Nusantara, likely caused by massive geological upheaval.

3. Threat from the Sky: Kisfan Yet to Be Unleashed

Allah mentions in another verse:

“Do they not see what is before them and what is behind them of the heaven and earth? If We will, We could cause the earth to swallow them or drop upon them fragments from the sky. Indeed, in that is a sign for every servant who turns to Allah.”

(Surah Saba’ 34:9)

The word كِسَفًۭا (kisfan) means chunks, fragments, or massive pieces from the sky. It can refer to:

  • Meteors, asteroids, or comets

  • Solar flares or cosmic radiation

  • Sound waves or vibrations that trigger earthquakes

  • Or any celestial event with terrestrial consequences (supernova, planetary alignment, electromagnetic phenomena)

Interestingly, Allah states that this type of punishment did not fall upon the People of Saba’ at that time. But it remains possible for the future, as a warning or punishment to those who transgress after receiving ample reminders.

Hence, it becomes clear that there are three disaster triggers from Surah Saba’ that we must reflect upon:

  • Water from below – dam collapse and irrigation failure

  • Water from above – rising seas, massive floods, and landscape changes

  • Heavenly punishmentkisfan that is yet to happen, but may descend in the end times

And all three of these are increasingly likely to occur again in the Nusantara if we continue turning away — just like the former People of Saba’.

Why is Punishment Sent?

Allah does not send punishment arbitrarily. The reason is clear. Surah Ad-Dukhan elaborates two types of transgressions that make a nation deserving of punishment in this world, not just in the hereafter:

إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةٍۢ مُّبَـٰرَكَةٍ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِينَ

“Indeed, We sent it (the Qur’an) down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].”

“On that night every precise matter is made distinct.”

“As a command from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger].”

“As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.”

“Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, if you should be convinced.”

(Surah Ad-Dukhan 44:3–7)

But mankind still commits two forms of excess:

1. Doubting the Messenger and the Book (Internal)

“But they are in doubt, amusing themselves.”

(Surah Ad-Dukhan 44:9)

They question whether the Messenger is truly sent by Allah, and mock the divine Book. They trivialise the core messages of tawhid.

2. Mocking the Divinity of Allah (External)

“There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death—your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.”

(Surah Ad-Dukhan 44:8)

Though they acknowledge this, they still cherry-pick the commands of Allah — following only what suits their desires.

This is the real transgression: mocking Allah’s message internally (doubt) and externally (mockery). And once such transgressions become widespread, As-Sa’ah, the sudden worldly punishment, begins.

As-Sa’ah: The Sudden Hour

“Say: On the Day of Decision, the belief of those who disbelieve will not benefit them, nor will they be reprieved.”

(Surah As-Sajdah 32:29)

As-Sa’ah is not just the Day of Judgement. It also refers to sudden destruction — like the one that wiped out the People of Saba’. And now, we dwell in the same land, retracing the same steps.

Kuala Lumpur and the Symbol of As-Sa’ah

Observe the Klang Valley. A modern city built along the confluence of two main rivers: Sungai Gombak and Sungai Klang. Surrounding it lies a quartz ridge — and along this ridge are two massive dams:

  • Sungai Batu Dam (capacity ±30 billion litres)

  • Klang Gates Dam (capacity ±25 billion litres)

If both dams collapse simultaneously, this will no longer be just a flash flood. A wave of water 5 to 15 storeys high could sweep through Kuala Lumpur within minutes. These two massive basins would release water down narrow channels — converging at Dataran Merdeka, the symbolic heart of the nation.

If Allah sends down kisfan (كِسَفًۭا) from the sky, as mentioned in Surah Saba’ 34:9 — a tremor from the heavens or seismic jolt from the earth — it could destroy these dams, especially as they are built upon hard quartz rock formations, which are brittle and non-flexible.

Note: If a major earthquake occurs near Janda Baik or Bentong, zones located along active seismic faults, the tremors could reach Kuala Lumpur.

We’ve seen how Bangkok suffered from tremors caused by a strong earthquake in Myanmar — hundreds of kilometres away. Structures were damaged. Panic ensued.

Kuala Lumpur is no different — built in a valley, flanked by rocky hills, with a tightly woven drainage system.

Isn’t this a mirror of what befell the People of Saba’? Floods, geographical upheaval, and destruction brought about by a society that mocked reminders?

Warnings Have Already Come

Allah does not punish without warning. When voices of warning emerge — do not mock, do not ridicule, do not ignore.

“Whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul. And whoever errs only errs against it. And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And never would We punish until We sent a messenger.”

(Surah Al-Isra’ 17:15)

The previous nations were punished because they rejected the reminders. So now we must ask ourselves — what about us?

Conclusion: The Nusantara Awaits Its Hour

We are the remaining heirs of the Hanif legacy. We are the people of the East, mentioned in many verses. We live upon land that once held a mighty civilisation. But we are now repeating the same excesses — doubting reminders, mocking divine laws.

If we do not change, this land will break again. And the heavens will once more send down their kisfan.

Though many may remain heedless until it is too late — you are among those who have already received the reminder.

So rise.

Not in fear, but in awareness and readiness. For the sky has given its signs. And the earth awaits permission to unleash the wrath it has long held.
